At the foot of the castle in Stará Ľubovňa is one of the most interesting open-air museums in Slovakia - the Ľubovňa Open-Air Museum (Ľubovniansky skanzen). It was established in 1985 and has been growing consistently ever since, recreating the image of an ancient Carpathian village. It features more than 20 original buildings transferred from surrounding villages or faithfully reconstructed.
Wandering between cottages, a blacksmith's shop, a school or a granary, you can feel the atmosphere of everyday life of the people who inhabited the area at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The houses are furnished with authentic furniture, tools, textiles and even children's toys. Here every object has a story. You can enter many of the buildings and feel like a visitor from more than 100 years ago.
In the reconstructed interiors of old huts you will see what the kitchens, chambers, craftsmen's workshops looked like. Everything is decorated as if the hosts had just left just for a moment. Particularly noteworthy are the presentations of old professions: blacksmith, carpenter, weaver, village school teacher or wireman, as well as the operation of a water mill or sawmill.
You will also meet live animals at the open-air museum: goats, sheep, chickens and sometimes even horses. They are part of the exposition and willingly pose for photos especially when they get something tasty in return.
At the heart of the open-air museum is a beautiful wooden Greek Catholic church from 1833 moved from the nearby village of Matysová. Its construction, richly decorated iconostasis and interior atmosphere are very impressive even for those who are not interested in sacred architecture.
The open-air museum in Stará Ľubovňa is a place where history comes alive. Thanks to authentic objects, crafts, rituals and animals, visitors can not only see, but also feel what life was like in a former Carpathian village. An ideal place for a family outing and a trip back in time.
